5 FLICKS You May Have Missed This Year (2024)

In the sprawl of streaming and theatrical releases as well as niche indie films, it can be difficult to keep track of every great FLICK. Luckily FLICKBOYS try a little of everything and never get bogged down with commitments to one movie or style so we keep track of some of the FLICKS you may have missed.

Here are my Top 5 FLICKS you may have missed but should definitely try to encounter:

5. Boy Kills World – 🟩

  • This film gets a strong green flag. It’s Kill Bill meets the Hunger Games. Bill Skarsgard looking deliciously ripped. It’s the voice of Bob from Bob’s Burgers saying weird and chaotic things. There’s even a scene with large mascot costumes battling to the death. It walks a fine line of being a little narratively heavy handed and sometimes gets a little too ridiculous for it’s own good but it has buckets of stylized sequences, a very engaging cast, and a story with a lot to say.

4. Thelma – 🟩

  • A modern day “Grumpy Old Men”, this film follows Thelma, an aging grandmother, who falls prey to a phone scam and takes matters into her own hands to get her money back. The entire film follows a mission impossible style format with a cast of 70+ year old actors and I had a smile on my face from start to finish. The charm and bluntness of the script perfectly captures the story of the older folks who still have a lot to offer the world.

3. Love Lies Bleeding – 🟩

  • Seeing Kristen Stewart play a perfect strong lesbian character really highlights why she seemed so uncomfortable sometimes in her roles in Twilight. The film follows a drifter who is training for a body building competition and the small town gym employee who involves her in a sprawling plot of secrets, drugs, and murder. The two leads in the film are a true joy to watch and the story continues to take mind boggling twists all leading up to a finale that is truly larger than life. IYKYK.

2. Blink Twice – 🟩

  • Zoe Kravitz directorial debut was a stunning film in every way. The film follows two female servers who get swept away to a resort by the attractive wealthy man that takes an interest in them. It has a feeling like “Get Out” with that subtle touch of paranoia and uneasiness that slowly unravels as it goes. This film digs deep. It will shock you with a type of horror and dread that even Freddy Kruger may have trouble cooking up. The commentary is so poignant and well constructed and the finale leaves you with a multi faceted avenue for interpretation.
  1. Kneecap – 🟩🟩
  • This small film even flew under my radar until I encountered it by accident, but I was so glad I did. Following a school teacher who becomes a champion and revolutionary, along with two teens who he inspires to become a Traditional Irish Rap group fighting for their native language not to be erased. With colorful neon sequences, words being stylishly written on the screen around them, and lead actors who are dripping with charm, this movie took me on such a fun journey. Would you believe? It’s also a completely true story and the lead actors are the real people who started a movement over language with their music.
