Our tastes change from year to year but we wanted to Capture the Christmas films that have spoken to us or continue to speak to us during this Holiday Season. We Know you’re being flooded with hallmark and netflix christmas movies and loads of nostalgia bait, but here’s the FLICKS we’re watching this Holiday Season!
Kyle’s FLICKS
- The Muppet Christmas Carol
The only adaptation of the Dickens classic that gets it right — by making it entertaining as fuck!
2. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
I think we all understand Clark Griswold’s pursuit in having the perfect family Christmas, and how the only thing we end up accomplishing is becoming utterly insane in the process.
3. Black Christmas ’74
A true holiday classic from the director of A Christmas Story, it sets up the holiday slasher trend YEARS before John Carpenter’s Halloween!
4. Mixed Nuts
An underrated cult classic about a suicide-prevention hotline whose workers learn they’re being evicted on Christmas Eve, featuring an eclectic cast including Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Juliette Lewis, and Adam Sandler.
5. Batman Returns
This “alt-Christmas” film gives The Penguin a Christ-like storyline: born into nobility but cast into the sewers, only to return mad as hell for a return to his Gotham throne.
Dan’s FLICKS
- The Grinch (Live Action)
This film just keeps Getting better somehow. Incredible cast, hilarious dialogue, and timeless practical effects create a delicious Christmas treat.
2. Miracle on 34th St. (1947)
I hadn’t seen this in a while but watched again this year and was reminded why it’s stood the test of time! The scene when Santa speaks to the dutch girl in her own language brought a Tear to my eye.
3. Klaus
Netflix made something special with this animated film about the importance of the post office and the communication that’s needed to heal a community. Heartwarming and artistic, this is a special holiday film.
4. Spirited
Apple TV made this knockout movie about a monsters Inc style production company designed to scare wealthy people into the christmas spirit Using “A Christmas Carol” style narratives and elaborate special effects. The Music is fun, the commentary is sharp, and the production is incredibly snappy.
5. The Holdovers
Last year’s instant classic. The amount of times I’ve repeat watched this film is embarrassing. It has some of the greatest performances and most meaningful character arcs that I’ve ever seen presented in a christmas film. This film is epic no matter what time of the year it is but really hits home during Christmas!
Happy Holidays from The FLICKBOYS!
